The environment around is much softer and gentler than much of Spain with leafy forests, dazzling views, valleys dotted with wild flowers and air as pure as youll find in Europe.
It's magnificent walking country, with cobbled pathways linking one sparkling white village nestled in the mountains to the next. The walks cover a wide range of abilities from extremely easy to relatively strenuous and all taking in delightful views on the way. Spring and autumn are favourite times to walk although it's possible all year round.
In the autumn the colours are sensational as the leaves start to fall. Early morning mists give way to warm sunny days and cooler evenings. Winter can occassionally be bracing but still bright. And at night it's time to watch the logs crackling in the fire. Some days there will be rain too which keeps the region so green. The earliest signs of spring signal the arrival of the first wild flowers which continue carpeting the land until the summer. Summer is lazy hot days and long evenings spent outdoors. The time for, fiestas, siestas and fun.
This is real Spain, green Spain. You won't find regimented rows of olive trees here. The forests of oak, cork and chestnut stretch for miles, interrupted only by villages, valleys and streams. At every turn there's a new view to admire. And all the while the sounds of birds, of the breeze and the perfumes of the countryside to keep you company. |
Village
Castano del Robledo is a genuinely unspoilt and wonderfully preserved village of 200 people with picturesque wooden beamed houses and cobbled streets. We have a swimming pool, doctor’s surgery, pharmacy, 4 shops, 4 bars serving food, playing fields, a posada (guest house) cheldren's play area and a primary school. There is a lovely tree lined square, which is the heart of the village. We’re right on the edge of the village right next to beautiful countryside so it’s very peaceful.
The village boasts one of the reamining original Baroque organs in Spain (recently restores but unmodified from original specification). From time to time there are organ recitals which attract musicians world wide.
The local people are extremely open, generous and warm hearted. We’ve also been lucky enough to also get to know people who’ve come here from further afield. In fact in our tiny village there are artists, musicians, architects, lawyers, a wildlife photographer and a writer!
Nearby activities
Five minutes away is another village with more bars, restaurants, swimming pool, supermarkets, delicious Argentian cakeshop and pottery shops. Aracena, the main town, is only 15 minutes away, with its shops, theatre, spa, organic shop, covered market, gyms, hotels, spa, many small jewellery and craft outlets and world famous caves. It is a stylish and cosmopolitan market town with an ancient castle on the very top of the hill around which it has grown.
